We are fortunate to receive some early season snow this season. It’s early November and there is snow in Mammoth at the higher elevations.  On Sunday we headed up to the Tamarack Cross Country Ski area with our backcountry skis and cut trail around Lake Mary and the side trails.  Snow was much better than the Friday before, since it had been cold and the blacktop underneath remained cold.

We skiied for 3 hours, seeing some of the regulars from the Mammoth nordic community up there as well. Rumors have it that the mountain will be grooming up to Minaret Summit soon.  Last year we skiied early season up there before Tamarack opened for the season.  Nothing like starting your ski season at 9,000 feet!  Skiing above Main Lodge may be good for skate skiing if they groom regularly and it doesn’t get too warm during the day.  Let’s hope the snow stays and more snow will come!

Snow fell in the high Sierras last night – enough for us to pull out the light BC touring skis and head up to the new Mammoth bike trails.  It was our first ski of the year – great to get on the snow, but with the pavement below, the skis iced up quite a bit.  So we kept the ski short, nevertheless it’s great to slap on the skinny skis early in November.  More snow is expected in the coming week and if it stays cold the touring will improve.  We’ve chosen the light BC touring skis to go out on since they are a bit more durable for just touring.
